Creative anarchy at its very best

This article reviews the rules of graphic design or how to bend and break them. It uses metaphors to real life to explain how some can be broken and others can be bent. The authors argument is that to create a successful piece it needs to stand out from the crowd and to do that you need to know how to break the rules. this article has many strengths for example it helps to clearly understand how ideas work and when you can break the rules. There are parts I disagree with as well; it says that all ideas have already been created and that any "new" ones are just a recycled old one. I would argue that when did someone create the last new design and start redoing old ones. This article is applicable not only to graphic design but really anything you do. Overall I think that this article was correct in the sense that most follow the rules so to stand out you need to know how to break the rules.

Reflection

Throughout kiwi the creator used these design  principles very well. They mainly focus on the trees. the trees are all evenly spaced and roughly the same size, and the cliff has a similar shape all the way down. These elements give the piece a kind of balance and pattern. The story that you can get from this was this was a wingless bird that's only want/dream in life is to fly. judging by the enormity of thee cliff the bird spent a long time trying to achieve this goal and in the end it finally felt like it was flying. When the bird is just getting ready to jump they added a wind up and sprint that gave a fast feel to it. This ease in is something we learned about in class. something I would like to add to my project would be the steady and natural feeling speed that this creator was able to portray. I felt that the creator did a fantastic job of making the kiwi have a personality and feelings without words or even arms. I feel like this isn't a finished project because it has a lack of textures, which may have been what they were going for but if I were in charge thats how I would improve it. I really enjoyed this clip and I felt sympathy for the bird, its also tough for me to watch the ending.

Pencils

My process behind this was first, of course, I followed the packet to make a very basic pencil and can. I thought I should expand on that Idea and make it a bit  more realistic so I lengthened out the pencil and added a different texture to the metal on the end of what I usually think of a wooden pencil. For the can I pictured a can of green beans and I took the label off and was left with a metal can with these big rivets on it so that was how I made that.

The first basic thing I took away from this was a deeper knowledge of the tools and how to use them, for example the rectangle tool drawn from the middle can create the effect of depth on the pencil because it adds the lines and makes it look hexagonal like a real pencil. Another tool was the direct select tool which I used to take the bottom half of the ellipse and drag it down to create the can. Finally, I have heard of the live paint bucket tool before but I wasn't exactly sure how to use it and with this project I now know how to .

The second thing I took away from this is how much a little variation can change the whole feel to a piece. For example, my first pencil to the second. Not too much changed but it went from a child's pencil to a pencil at an employee's desk.

Finally I learned more about the nature of 3D objects especially with the ink well on my fountain pen drawing. What I mean by this is I redrew the inkwell a couple of times the first time the bottom was flat, then I changed the lip on top from two overlapping ellipsis and finally the Ink on the inside at first was a rectangle then a flat black then finally I added the outline to pronounce the shape.

Graphic Design

Many things use graphic design that you don't even realize. The best way to describe it is, in a movie when one camera cuts to the next and it feels natural like a fluent motion. It is like this in graphic design when you look at a menu and you don't even think about it because it just feels natural, its designed how you expect it to be organized and it just looks appealing.

It isn't just confined to menus however, someone somewhere designed every different sign manual pamphlet or website. Not only that but they made it look easy as well.

Using different typefaces and colors a graphic designer is able to achieve and portray an emotion or idea. It can be from organizing words on a page and choosing the font and color to creating a picture or design keeping in mind the feelings behind each color. The best way to understand what graphic design is, is to picture life without it. It would be boring not easy or fun to read and would ultimately create a monotonous environment everywhere.

I really enjoyed this video because it was fun to watch and helps to get across its message which is what graphic design is all about

The Final project

The Final project

For the video segment of our product, we all made videos then voted on the winner. I was in charge of setting up shots and I had help when the others weren’t acting. I also made the watch prop for our video.

In the graphic design portion we all made logos and the one seen on the website we, again all voted for.  As seen here, my contribution to the website and graphics were that I designed the banner and the color scheme for the website I also helped trouble shoot the website.

For animation we all made the watch in sketch up then decided based on each other’s skills, which one of us was in charge of each of the 4 parts of animation. I was in charge of making the actual watch, so I started over and perfected by reshaping it and choosing fitting textures.

In the end, our team was capable to work together and produce an astounding end product. We used each others skills and strengths to fill in for each others weaknesses and created a strong team by doing so. Our team had two lions which resulted in some disagreements at points but we were able to guide ourselves to the correct path.

Prime Watch Commercial

Overall I enjoyed this project because it had a lot of freedom. We were able to use most things we learned from 3rd quarter. I find that the video is pretty easy to follow what happens and it still conveys the message we were aiming for. The video came out exactly as I was picturing in my head.
My group used a new technique as well which was panning, where the camera followed our actress walk down a hall. This turned out very well it was smooth and consistent and feels natural. Something new I personally used was during editing I learned how to display a name on the screen during a testimonial.
If I could have changed one thing I would have added more people talking for background audio because I feel I had to get too much music to fill in the blank spaces where someone is just walking. I also had trouble meeting a minuet which I did eventually get.
